Richard Gere and Big Brother star Shilpa Shetty case dismissed

The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a legal case alleging that Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Celebrity Big Brother and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty committed obscene behaviour in public.

Last year, warrants for Richard Gere’s arrest were issued after he held Shilpa Shetty in his arms and kissed her in public at an Aids awareness event. It was claimed at the time that Richard Gere’s actions were an affront to public decency in India.

Richard GereRichard Gere had at first dismissed the fuss caused by this incident, but he later apologised for causing any offence by his behaviour, and now because Richard Gere plans to visit India soon, his lawyer had put in an appeal to the court to stop the arrest warrants against the actor.

Chief Justice of India, KG Balakrishnan ruled: "Richard Gere is free to enter the country. This is the end of the matter."

The Supreme Court of India’s Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and another judge believed that such complaints as those made against Richard Gere were filed for "cheap publicity" and they added that the complainants "have brought a bad name to the country".

Shilpa Shetty, who had been in the news just before this due to her appearance in the UK’s Celebrity Big Brother, had also been expected to appear in court at the time over charges that she did nothing to resist Richard Gere's behaviour towards her.
